Learn how to change your storefront (transactional) currency and pricing display format (symbols, decimals, rounding) in Shopify.
Shopify changes store currency and pricing format: As a Shopify store owner, you can decide which of your store’s display (transactional) currencies. As of today, Shopify supports more than 130 currencies that you can use to charge and refund customers. You can also define a fully customized pricing format, including decimal and currency symbols.
Using locally accepted pricing formats can significantly increase your conversion rate. For example, customers in the United States are used to thinking of pricing as $19.99, while customers in France are used to seeing it at €19.99. Note the placement of the different decimal separators and currency symbols.
In addition to that, you can also define a payment currency in which you’ll receive regular payments through Shopify Payments.
How does Shopify change the currency and pricing format? This article will explain how to change each of them and how to change the format (i.e., how to display prices to customers).
How to change the currency of your storefront
To change your store currency (i.e., the currency your customers transact in), go to your store management > Settings > General and scroll down to the Store currency section.
If you haven’t made any sales yet, you can still change your currency by selecting it from the drop-down menu.
If you’ve already had at least one order (or even one unpaid), then you can’t change the store currency yourself. You’ll need to contact Shopify support and ask them for help. It is a very simple process and should only take a few minutes.
If you’re using Shopify Payments, you can also sell in multiple currencies.
Shopify Currency and Pricing Format: How to Change the Display Price Format
Shopify changes store currency and pricing format: To change the display format of your store’s currency, go to Store Management > Settings > General and scroll down to the Store currency section. Click Change Format, and the following box will be displayed.
There are four types of currency displays:
- HTML with currency – Used with currency symbols in HTML (i.e., storefronts and store administrators). For example, on your product page
- HTML without currency – Used in HTML, but without currency symbols
- Email with currency – Use it with currency symbol in email. For example, in an order confirmation email that is sent to a customer after a purchase
- Email without currency – Used for email, but without currency symbols
By default, the store currency is set to display as {{amount}}. However, there are five placeholders you can use:
Placeholders | Rounded corners | example |
---|---|---|
{{amount}} | No | 1,999.99 |
{{amount_no_decimals}} | Yes | 2,000 |
{{amount_with_comma_separator}} | No | 1.999,99 |
{{amount_no_decimals_with_comma_separator}} | Yes | 2,000 |
{{amount_with_apostrophe_separator}} | No | 1’999.99 |
To change the price display, simply change one of the inputs using the variables in the table above. In addition to variables, you can also use any custom currency symbol or text and place it before or after the variable.
For example, the pricing format for a French customer should be as follows:
{{amount_with_comma_separator}} €
Or the pricing format for UK customers without decimal should be:
£{{amount_no_decimals}}
