The five best used electric cars in 2022: which one are you going to buy?

Why use electric vehicles?

If you want to buy an electric car but are worried about the cost of a new electric car, then a good used electric car may be the best option for you. After all, the shortage and delays in new cars make buying a used car a great option because you can buy a brand-new used electric car for about half the price.

Today’s electric vehicles have a long lifespan, even longer than gas-powered cars, and used electric vehicles often have a low range of 50,000 or less. Keep in mind that EV battery packs are designed to last more than 200,000 miles. Electric vehicles also require less maintenance than gasoline-powered vehicles and have fewer moving parts to repair or replace. In addition, you can get an electric car that has been used for several years and can still drive a car with technology and range comparable to that of a new electric car.

Best Used Electric Car Buying Recommendations: Choose the best used electric cars

In our list of the five best used electric vehicles of 2022, we have selected the cars that have received the highest ratings, safe and reliable electric vehicles that will give you many happy miles of zero-emission driving. The EVs on our list are typically half the price of a new car or less. For example, the new base model, the Nissan Leaf, sells for around $29,000 at dealerships, but the used Leaf sells for $8,000 to $12,000.

One of the most important things when buying a used electric car is the range between charges. Today’s new electric vehicles have a battery range of more than 200 miles, while older cars typically have much less range on a single charge. Also note that not all used EVs support Level 3 charging. Be sure to check the charging port to see if it can accommodate a DC fast charging plug, and also check your vehicle’s charge status indicator to see how many miles it can support when fully charged. As EV batteries age, they typically have less charge, which can affect your driving range.

Chevrolet bolts

The snappy little Chevrolet Bolt debuted in 2017 and hasn’t changed much since. It was upgraded to a larger range in 2020, but all the used bolts were worth the money. It is a very spacious, practical and fun electric car. A new Bolt in 2022 will cost at least $31,000, but you can buy a Bolt from a few years ago for around 20K. All Bolts have large touchscreens that offer infotainment and driver assistance features, but some older Bolts don’t include DC fast charging. Keep an eye out for second-hand Bolts that include this fast charging feature.

Ford Focus Electric

Ford first released the compact Focus electric hatchback nationwide in 2011. You can find a good used Focus EV without spending a fortune, but be aware that older cars have an estimated range of 76 miles on a single charge. The 2017 model improves on this, with a range of 115 miles on a single charge, and Ford has also added Level 3 charging. The Focus was discontinued in 2018, but the smart small five-door sedan won the Green Car Vision Award in 2011. The new Focus electric is priced at $29,120. Expect to pay between $11,000 and $15,000 to buy a good used Focus.

Hyundai Ionic Electric

Even though the current Hyundai Ioniq Electric has a maximum range of only 170 miles, compared to 124 miles in the older version, it is one of the safest, most economical, and cheapest used electric cars you can buy. The five-seater hatchback has a spacious cargo area and a suite of infotainment and driver assistance features. While the 2021 Ioniq sells for $34,000 or more, you can find a good used car for $18,000 to $22,000. Hyundai has announced the sleek new Ioniq 5 for 2022 with a 168kW 225-horsepower motor and a range of 300 miles.

Kia Niro electric car

Best Used EV Buying Recommendation: A brand new Kia Niro EV will cost at least $32,490 before the federal tax credit drops to $39,990. However, this 2019 quality version of the EV will cost around $19,000 to $24,000. The Niro is a spacious compact crossover that can travel up to 239 miles on a single charge. It has a zero to 60 mph time of 6.5 seconds, which is faster than the Chevrolet Bolt. You’ll find a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto as standard, while Niro has very low ownership and maintenance costs. This Kia can be used as a pure gasoline car, a plug-in hybrid, and an all-electric EV.

Nissan Leaf

Best Used EV Collection 2022: An extremely cost-effective option for used EVs is the Nissan Leaf. The best-selling hatchback has been around since 2011, so there are plenty of used Leaf models across the United States. The estimated range is initially 84 miles (on a single charge). Look for a used Leaf with an optional Level 3 charging port. The 2016 SV and SL versions include a larger-capacity battery with a range of 107 miles, while the 2018 model has a range of 151 miles on a single charge. The new 2022 Leaf has an MSRP of $27,400, but a good used version costs $7,000 to $10,000.
